Timescale

The life of a founding designer at an early stage startup is a very exciting time. Especially when you’re starting from scratch. I was given that opportunity with Timescale: establishing the look & feel, logo, marketing collateral for in-person events and everything digital from YouTube videos to our website.

I worked my way up to Director of Design and in that phase of my tenure at Timescale, I grew the Marketing Design & Web team to 9 people, 6 designers and 3 web developers. I was able to establish a Product Design function and grow it to a team of three. Managing the teams and our external contractors and their respective budgets was an incredible learning opporunity.

The evolution of the Timescale logo. Early on we knew we wanted a symbol that embodied all of the characteristics we wanted in the database: something fast, strong, and agile. Majestic even.

Eventually we settled on the tiger because of the ties to Princeton University and the alliteration of Timescale Tiger.

AWS Re:Invent 2019

Much of our Marketing strategy pre-pandemic was physically going to where developers were. Banner stands, booth design, marketing collateral, and swag were a regular part of the workload.

Timescale’s mascot, EON. In the process of developing a hook for our marketing efforts, EON was born. Drawing inspiration from the Github Octocat and Sammy the Shark from DO, EON became our cuddly, approachable mascot at Timescale and any events we attended.

I worked with illustrator, Dermot Reddan, on character development. EON served faithfully for a number of years in swag, social posts, and other marketing collateral. You can still find a version of them in the Timescale Cloud app.

Various social animations featuring EON. Animation and videos were done in collaboration with Dermot Reddan and Tao Mao.

As part of our milestone of hitting 100 employees, I worked with 3D artist Oana Siserman to help us get these EON statues created.

At the beginning of 2023, I planned, budgeted, and ran our first Design + Web All Hands offsite in Bologna, Italy.

The primary objective of our offsite was to establish roadmap and rollout for our upcoming rebrand. We also discussed the state of Design at Timescale both on the Marketing and Product side. Various team members gave presentations on their Design specialties.

Lots of team building and amazing meals. So. Much. Mortadella.

Timescale featured in Times Square

One of my favorite moments at Timescale was the second time we were featured in Times Square with the announcement of our Series C and billion dollar valuation.
